In his role as Chair of the TCCI Small Business Committee Darren Alexander worked very hard with his group of volunteers to organise the first ever Small Business Expo in conjunction with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

The expo, held at Wrest Point Convention Centre in Hobart, consisted to 32 seminar sessions over two days — with 16 interstate and local business experts — as well as networking luncheons and guest speakers. Guest speakers on small business issues included: Michael Ossipoff, Jack English, Catherine DeVyre and John Brennan.

There were 41 exhibitors in total, including: Telstra, Veolia, IBM, Virgin Blue, Austrade, Aus Industry, Aurora, Australia Post, Alcatel-Lucent, the TCCI, Autech and many other businesses.

Consisting of two fully packed days of events, seminars and trade shows, the expo was designed to assist both start-up businesses and established companies who want to understand how to run their businesses more efficiently. It provided business owners with the latest information on technology, superannuation, electronic marketing and high performance sales and was a fantastic opportunity for the small business community to come together and learn, engage and network.

Darren believed the expo was “a great opportunity to expand your small businesses horizons, learn something new and network with fellow colleagues”. Mr Alexander was very happy with the response that was received and believed that it was great to see Tasmania getting behind and supporting the expo.

Small business is vital to the future of Tasmania, representing 96% of the business in the state. Small businesses need all the help they can get in the current global financial crisis. The expo assisted Tasmanian SMEs in their time of need by providing the opportunity to learn, engage and participate for their future and for the future of the state.
